The Stephen Elliott Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy has presented native Beaufortonian Charles S. Aimar with the Cross of Military Service.  Aimar, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, served with the 5th Marine Division from 1943 – 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart after having been wounded during the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945.

Only a direct or collateral descendant of a Confederate who served honorably, and who was a veteran who served honorably in defense of America, is eligible for this award. Approved by the Pentagon, the Cross and Medal  (for service during wartime) may be worn on service uniforms.  Bestowals of this award began with the Spanish-American War and continue through today. These medals are the most prized awards conferred by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
