Clark Trask and Marvin Dukes III won in the Tandem Category at River Quest. The duo finished the 7.4 kayak race in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 52 seconds.

George Post was the only competitor who raced a canoe at River Quest.

This weekend’s laundry list of athletic events North of the Broad corroborated Beaufort’s status as Healthiest County in South Carolina. Recently ranked by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Beaufort was dubbed Healthiest using the following factors: mortality and morbidity, tobacco use, obesity, access to health care, education, community safety and air quality.

And, what a weekend to be healthy in Beaufort! Parris Island hosted its Annual Triathlon Saturday morning, which included a 500-meter pool swim, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5k run. 600 participants flocked to the Military Combat Training Pool to begin the first of three races.

Later Saturday afternoon, Habersham hosted its Annual Beaufort Twilight Run to benefit Riverview Charter School. The USATF certified 8k started at 6pm and was followed by an Oyster Roast. The event also included a 5k Fun Walk and a Kids Fun Run. Close to 2000 people registered for the 2nd Annual event.

Also on Saturday at the Waterfront Park was River Quest, a kayak and canoe race that offered a 3-mile and a 7.4-mile course. Categories included K1, Surf Ski, Racing Kayak, Touring Sea Kayak, Recreational Sea Kayak, Tandem, C1, OC1, Outrigger and C2. The event raised money for the Backpack Buddies charity.

Each of these events were organized and delivered with professionalism. Beaufort should be proud to boast such a commitment to healthy activity. Close to 3000 participants, friends and family enjoyed a beautiful Saturday as they reaped the benefits of good, old-fashioned competition.

Whether competitors raced to win or to achieve personal goals, each deserve praise for conquering a physical pursuit!
