Nothing Says Spring like Daffodils in Bloom

By Wendy Pollitzer

Isabella "Izzy" Yeager at the Daffodil Farm in 2010

It’s that time of year again Beaufort…U-pick Daffodil Day at the Farm on Cane Island, owned by the estate of John and Flora Trask. Dr. Clark Trask and his wife, Evy and Mary Trask and her husband, DJ Henry coordinated this year’s Daffodil Festival, and it’s sure to be a memorable event for the entire family.

Each year, the Trask family opens the farm to the public and allows children of all ages to pick daffodils. Locally, it’s the Lowcountry introduction to Spring. When the daffodils arrive, barefoot weather is around the corner.

Cousins, Clark and Mary Trask, along with their spouses, Evy Trask and DJ Henry have organized a day of family fun. The farm will be open from 11am-4pm on Saturday, March 5.  Cost is $10 per person, and children under 12 are free. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be on sale, and live music will be provided. Proceeds will benefit Beaufort Academy, Friends of Caroline Hospice, New Plays Festival of the Lowcountry, the Beaufort County Open Land Trust and Riverview Charter School. Contributions are welcome.

Be sure to bring your 5-gallon buckets and definitely your camera. And just a hint to the kids…your teachers will love a nice surprise on Monday morning. Daffodils make everyone smile.

Ingredients for a good time: Oysters and microbrews

The St. Peter Catholic School’s Annual Oyster Roast and Microbrew Festival will be held Saturday, March 5, at the Live Oaks Park in Port Royal at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include all-you-can-eat oysters, beer, live music from the Steppin’ Stones, a silent auction, games, microbrew tastings and a live auction.

There will be a supervised, secure area for kids with face painting, inflatable rides, games and entertainment. There will also be a food court featuring delicacies from local chefs and a special kids’ menu, courtesy of Bella Luna Café.

Sponsorships are still available and are tax- deductible. Tickets are on sale at the St. Peter School office and at Bill’s Liquors on

Lady’s Island and Bluffton. For more information, please call 843 522-9555.

FUNDRAISERS ARE FUN

One family shows solidarity, leadership for event

By Pamela Brownstein

Joe Arp wears a bright pink T-shirt and a big smile. He addresses participants gathered for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life with purpose, enthusiasm and a good sense of humor.

He calls to his wife, Linda, in the back of the room who assists him with his motivational power point presentation. Then she talks to the group about team fundraising ideas.

Later in the meeting, Joe proudly introduces a woman sitting in the back holding a baby. It’s Linda’s daughter, Dana Domino, and she describes how her team, Gilligan’s Beaufort, has already earned $1,854 through fundraisers at the restaurant.

Linda’s sister, Barbara Quinlan, hands out prizes and awards toward the end of the meeting.

It becomes quite obvious that when it comes to fighting cancer, this family is united and committed.

Of the 37 teams already signed up, five are related to the Arp family. This 24-hour event that raises money for the American Cancer Society will be held at the track at Beaufort Middle School on Friday, April 29.

Joe and Linda Arp are co- chairs for the local fundraiser, and their goal is to raise $100,000.

Jaycee Novotny (not related to the Arps) and her Tastefully Simple team hopes to reach $5,000. Novotny, who has been involved with Relay For Life for more than 10 years, said, “Last year we raised $2,200 and we wanted to aim high. We believe we will meet our $5,00 goal!”

It’s that kind of determined spirit that inspires everyone involved in this event to make a difference in the community.

Local Directs ‘Angel Camouflaged’

By Wendy Pollitzer

R. Michael Givens

R. Michael Givens is the writer, director and cinematographer of one of BIFF’s full length independent feature films, Angel Camouflaged. I had the delightful opportunity to sit down with Michael and discuss the film as well as his concerns about South Carolina’s film incentive program recently. And, I was privileged to watch the ‘rock ‘n roll drama’, before its local debut.

Dilana Robichaux as "Scottie"

This film had me rocking from the get-go. I am a self-proclaimed music connoisseur and ipod schizophrenic and insist that the original soundtrack for this film will get aficionados of all genres on their feet dancing. Dilana Robichaux, runner-up on the CBS show “Rock Star Supernova,” who plays Scottie, performs nine songs in the film. Her raspy and confident voice is therapeutic. She has a harmonious and dramatic energy that is contagious.

Patty Smyth, who plays Aunt Marie in Angel Camouflaged also wrote two songs for soundtrack, “Hard for You to Love Me” and “Just,” which she performs in the film.  She is a timeless entertainer who can put you in an eighties frame of mind with a present-day aura. She’s just a classic.

Additionally, the Marshall Tucker Band and hip hop icon, Kurtis Blow deliver unorthodox performances in two scenes that radiate optimism for southern race relations.   The Southern Rock legend MTB plays a version of Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky,” while Kurtis Blow rocks out the Lynard Skynard classic, “Gimme Three Steps.”   The unexpected distortion will put a smile on your face and bring you back to yesteryear. Those two scenes were a couple of my favorites in the movie.

When Scottie moves from the Mojave Dessert, she enters the world of the South Carolina Lowcountry, a place we all call home.  Givens nails the cinematography of the picturesque coast, filmed at locations you’ll all recognize.  You’ll see Boone Hall’s Avenue of Oaks, shots of Tradd, Broad and King Streets in downtown Charleston, John’s Island’s beloved 1500 year-old Angel Oak tree and a memorable shot of a summer sunset over the Ravenel Bridge.

Most of Angel Camouflaged is filmed on location at Bowens Island (just before Folly Beach), which is just about the most accurate depiction of classic Lowcountry docks  and reminiscent of fish camps that dot the hummocks surrounding our much-loved barrier and sea islands.  Scottie and her brother, Morgan, played by Warrick Grier, inherit a bar, called Koconuts, which is actually the Oyster Joint at Bowens Island Restaurant.

Givens’ cinematography of the coveted Lowcountry landmarks represents nothing short of paradise.  He captures the essence of the physical attributes as well as the overall comfortable and stress-free mood of our region.

James Brolin as "Salt" and Warrick Grier as "Morgan"

James Brolin’s character, Thaddeus “Salt” Salterman is the bait shop owner and neighbor to Koconuts.  We all have an old “Salt” in our lives. Mine is Big Stratty Pollitzer. You know the type…carefree and loyal, straight out of a Jimmy Buffet tune or a Hemingway novel, a guy that treats spartina grass and rising tides as his alter. That’s Salt, and Brolin is brilliant in his role.

Lowcountry images of beautiful southern women, relic cars on dirt roads, Frogmore Stew and Firefly Vodka on the docks add to the soul of the film, which is a Must-See at this year’s festival. If you’re at all intrigued by stories of emotion and appreciate well-done moving art on screen, you’ll love Angel Camouflaged.

It was a pleasure to meet with you Michael. Your film is a gift to all of us who have found salvation in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Keep up the great work!

About the Movie:

SCOTTIE, a singer whose substance abuse causes her career to implode, hides out in the Mojave Desert. Her life changes when she inherits a bar in South Carolina. Her ex-boyfriend steals her trailer and throws her out into the desert night.  Scottie takes nothing but her tears and guitar.  When she sees the dilapidated bar, she’s horrified. Scottie has to battle raging motorcycle clubs, gang-bangers, Satan himself and a neighbor hell bent on sabotaging her efforts.  This film is an emotional adventure about the will of a woman and her brother who find the strength to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.

Awards:

Angel Camouflaged has already won four prestigious Awards at the Action on Film  International Film Festival in Pasadena, California including Best Cinematography for Michael Givens, Best Actress for Dilana, Best Supporting Actor for James Brolin and Best Artwork and Poster Design for Michael Givens. Angel Camouflaged is scheduled for national distribution in March.

What’s Next for Givens:

Michael Givens is currently working on his next project, a film based on the novel, Jigsaw by North Carolina author, Ted Brogden. Brogden will be in town Saturday, February 19th signing copies of his book at the Beaufort Bookstore in Beaufort Town Center.

“I do not live in 90210. I live in Beaufort, SC and I want better film incentives for my state.”

If you believe this and want more films made here at home, contact your legislators now at www.scstatehouse.gov  because the film industry in SC needs your help.  Michael Givens encourages you to do so. “Tell your Senator that money generated from movies filmed in South Carolina will go directly back into your constituents’ pockets. That might make them listen,” says Givens, a vocal proponent of increased film incentives in SC.  For full coverage of this issue, including an article from the Charleston Post and Courier and a report on the Economic Impact of Film Production Incentives from the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, please view the following links:
